2007 Matti Havens
The materials and mediums of expression are secondary to the concept when I develop a work of art. As a result my work encompasses a diversity of styles. The concept is the priority and I use whatever medium and material is best to express that idea. These ideas are astute and ironic observations of the culture and world that surrounds me. Sometimes they are humorous and occasionally they alter how one engages the surrounding environment.
Furthermore I also make work that includes geometry and repetitive mathematical patterns. These patterns are not only repeated but rather are organic, forming as the roots of a tree around a sidewalk, and finding the peculiarities of a space and forming and fitting to it.
I earned my MFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and I had a residency at AZB in 2007. I currently live and work in NY City.
